What I've Been Reading: July 2017.

I appear to have upped my reading game as I managed to fly through eights books in July. Two books that failed to hold my attention went onto the DNF finish pile so I won't be mentioning them fully in this post.

My name is Amber Reynolds. There are 3 things you should know about me: 1. I'm in a coma. 2. My husband doesn't love my anymore. 3. Sometimes I lie.

The blurb on this is short, sweet and doesn't giving anything away about the book's plot. I went into this with a very open mind as I didn't have a clue what to expect. The book switches between the present day with amber in the coma, Amber's POV in the week leading up to her accident and flashbacks to Amber's childhood via a diary. There is so much going on in this that I couldn't get enough of it. There's so many twists and turns that you might get whiplash and I was not ready for the ending at all. I can't say too much without giving away all the good stuff, I get why the blurb is so vague now but this is a book you most definitely need to get your mitts on!

A shadow follows Sophie. Watching. Waiting. Her instinct tells her that it's someone she knows. But Who? The man she met internet dating? The nurse caring for her ill mother? Or is her mother faking her illness? The only thing she knows is that she can't trust anyone. Sophie must delve into a dark history to reveal her stalker. But there are some stories that should never be told...

I'd already read Saving April by Sarah A. Denzil and loved it, so it came as no surprise to me that I ended up loving this too. I think I even loved this one more as I finished this in a day. I managed to predict vaguely where this was going (and if you watch Pretty Little Liars, you'd probably be able to guess too) but not quite the hows and wheres of it. The how is the most shocking of all and left me feeling justified with my hatred of a certain character.
I've already added Silent Child, Sarah's other novel, to my to-read list as the two books I've read have set a high standard and I've no doubt that I'll love that too.

It's spring break of senior year. Anna, her boyfriend Tate, her best friend Elise, and a few other close friends are off on a debaucherous trip to Aruba that promises to be the time of their lives. But when Elise is found brutally murdered, Anna finds herself trapped in a country not her own, fighting against vile and contemptuous accusations. As Anna sets out to find her friend's killer, she discovers hard truths about her friendships, the slippery nature of truth, and the ache of young love. As she awaits the judge's decree, it becomes clear that everyone around her thinks she is not just guilty, but dangerous. When the truth comes out, it is more shocking than one could ever imagine...

This was definitely my favourite book of the month and I can't recommend it highly enough! It's reminiscent of real life cases such as Amanda Knox's conviction, it does make you think but it's important to remember that this is still fiction! While this is classed as YA, the fact that I'm in the wrong side of my twenties to be considered one didn't take away any of my enjoyment of the book.
The timeline constantly switches, showing you Anna's life before the trip, the lead up the Elise's body being discovered, the aftermath of that and Anna's trial. I honestly had no idea how this was going to end, but when it did I found the ending very satisfying, if shocking.

Halley has always followed in the wake of her best friend, Scarlett. But when Scarlett learns that her boyfriend has been killed in a motorcycle accident, and that she's carrying his baby, she's devastated. For the first time ever, Scarlett really needs Halley. Their friendship may bend under the weight, but it'll never break- because a true friendship is a promise you keep forever.

This was a cute read, something that Sarah Dessen does well. I've been an avid reader of hers since I was a teenager and again, the fact that I no longer am one, doesn't take away my enjoyment. It isn't my favourite Sarah Dessen book but I did like it. I'd recommend The Truth About Forever or What Happened to Goodbye if you want to read a Sarah Dessen book, as I love those!

Kensington Worth had a vision for her senior year. It involved her best friends, her posh private school in downtown Chicago and time alone with her piano until her audition was perfected, a guaranteed tickets into the best music programs in the world. Instead, a nightmare took over. It didn't happen all at once, but her life unraveled quickly- a tiny thread that evil somehow kept pulling until everything precious was taken from her. She was suddenly living miles away from her old life, trapped in an existence she didn't  choose- one determined to destroy her from the inside, leaving only hate and anger behind. It didn't help that her neighbour, the one whose eyes held danger, was enjoying every second of her fall. Owen Harper was trouble, his heart wild and his past the kind that's spoken about in whispers. And somehow, his path was always intertwined with Kensington's, every interaction crushing her, ruining her hope for any future better than her now. Sometimes though, what everyone warns is trouble, is exactly what the heart needs. Owen Harper was consumed with darkness, and it held onto his sould for years. When Kensington looked at him, she saw a boy who'd gotten good at taking others down when they threatened his carefully balanced life. But the more she looked, the more she saw other things too- good things... Things to admire. Things... To love. Things that made her want to be reckless. And those things... they were the scariest of all.

This is the first book in the Harper Boys series and I really enjoyed it. I liked the progression of Kensington and Owen's relationship ans there was some shocking moments in the book that I wasn't expecting. I wouldn't say I loved it was it was a good read and I'm glad it popped up in my Goodreads recommendations.

Big city, big dreams, no money, no problem... Six 'friends', one flat, big dreams... What could go wrong? When eightenn-year-old Anna leaves school and moves to Liverpool, she feels like her life is finally beginning. She'd lander her dream job at a theatre, and she's moving into an exciting (if not slightly run-down) flat on a buzzing street lined with shops, bars and buckers. Best of all, her new flatmates are kind, welcoming and a lot of fun- what more could she ask for? But although her new life is fun, it's also a little overwhelming. Anna's job quickly falls through, and then she realises that although her new friends are great, they're also a little mixed-up... and it's not long before Anna starts using her blog to talk about hr experiences, from the hilarious to the ridiculous to the little-bit-scary. But when Anna spills a bigger secret than she can handle, suddenly the consequences are all too real. She'll have to prove she has the mettle to make it in the big city, or risk losing everything she thinks she wants.

Keris Stainton is an author that's been on my radar for a while but this is actually the first book I've read of her's. I wasn't disappointed by the time I'd finished this so it was definitely worth the wait. The point of view switches throughout between Anna and her flatmates, which I really liked as they all had their own storylines and it leads up to Anna spilling the secret as mentioned in the blurb nicely. I had my favourites out of the flatmates, those being Nina and Sean and it was refreshing to read a book around being at uni, actually set in England! Is it me or am I just missing out? If you know any more university novels by british authors, throw some recommendations my way please!

Two Women. Two Love Affairs. One unforgettable story. Kings Cross station, 1943. Rose arrives in London hoping to swap the drudgery of wartime for romance, glamour and jiving the GIs at Rainbow Corner, the famous dance hall in Piccadilly Circus. As the bombs fall, Rose loses her heart to a pilot but will lose so much more before the war has done its worst. Las Vegas, present day. A beautiful woman in  wedding dress walks into a seedy bar and asks the first man she sees to marry her. When Leo slips the ring onto Jane's finger, he has no idea that his new wife will stop at nothing to get what she wants. So when Jane meets Rpse, now a formidable older lady, there's no love lost between them. But with time running out, can Rose and Jane come together to make peace with the tragic secrets that have always haunted their lives? After the Last Dance is an extraordinary story of two women, seperated by time but connected by fate, that will make you believe in the redemptive power of unexpected love.

Confession: Sarra Manning is my favourite author, ever. It started when I read an excerpt of Guitar Girl in a magazine and promptly went out to buy the book. Fourteen years on, that crown isn't going anywhere. I love her YA novels and I love her adult novels... but this is the first book I haven't actually loved. I liked it but for me, this doesn't compare to her other books. It just didn't grip me.
I like how her other books intertwine with each other, and this one doesn't. The YA books have fictional bands that pop up every now and then, while the adult books have common links like Skirt magazine, where a few of the characters work. I just find the way Sarra has linked the books to create one world in which the characters in the books all live really clever and I haven't really noticed anything similar in other books that aren't part of a series before. As for my favourites by Sarra Manning, I'd recommend Let's Get Lost, You Don't Have To Say You Love Me and Unsticky.

A serial killer is stalking your home town. He has a type: all his victims look the same. And they all look like you. Kate returns home from a post break-up holiday with her girlfriends to news of a serial killer in her home town- and his victims all look like her. It could, of course, be a simple coincidence. Or maybe not. She becomes convinced she is being watched, followed even. Is she next? And could her mild-mannered ex-boyfriend really be a deranged murderer? Or is the truth something far more sinister?

I didn't use to reach for thriller books but I've made it through a few lately and boy, is this one good! So good, I immediately added both of Alex Lake's books to my to-read list! The book starts after Kate's break up, with one murder already having taken place. The book flips between Kate's POV and her ex-boyfriend's, as well as adding in flashbacks to do with one of Kate's friends. I didn't find it easy to work out who the serial killer was while I was reading it but there are little clues dropped throughout the book which I didn't pick up on until it was revealed! A gem of a book, I recommend it!

Look Incredible Deluxe Box, July 2017.

Look Incredible is my favourite company when it comes to beauty box subscriptions. They offer a standard box at £25 and a deluxe box at £35. I've been having the deluxe box for about a year now and I'm still loving it. All the products are full size, so there's no samples here!

BareMinerals Blemish Remedy Mattifying Prep Gel (RRP £22)
I really like the fact that I haven't had to buy any primers in the last year as this subscription has kept me nicely stocked up. This is a nice primer but I wouldn't say it's one of my favourites I've tried.

UTan & Tone Coconut Tanning Water (RRP £17.99)
I'm going to be honest here, self tanning scares the crap out of me. I'm very pale and the few times I've tried to use gradual tanners haven't turned out the best so the idea of using tan on my face... It's enough to have me quaking in my boots. That being said, I have been using an enhance and glow body lotion recently, and while it isn't giving me a tan as such, I definitely don't look like Casper the friendly ghost anymore! It does say that this mist can be used under makeup as a primer or afterwards as a setting spray which does sound more up my street so if I get brave, I'll be reaching for this.

Too Faced Love Flush Blush in Funfetti (RRP £30)
Oh my god, this might be the cutest blush I've ever laid my eyes on. The packaging reminds of the polly pockets I played with as a child and the design on the blush is adorable. I'm almost afraid to use this and ruin the bunnies.

Dior Diorific Mat Lipstick in 504 Magique (RRP £29.50)
I love this shade, it's a beatiful orangey red which is something I would choose myself so I'm very happy with this. The packaging is very heavy... And awkward, this isn't going to fit in my lipstick stand!

top - bottom: Too Faced Blush, Dior Magique

What I've Been Reading: June 2017.

This was something a little different for me but I loved this. I have visited Butlins in Skegness before and that was the reason I felt drawn to reading this. It wqas nice to read about the camp as it would have been back that, it was a really interesting insight! I even found myself googling for images of the old uniforms. The book focusses on Molly, Bunty and Plum, who all work at the recently reopened camp and we learn all about their separate backstories. A really good novel, particularly if you're a Butlins fan!

This book starts with Jason Bradley, star quarterback, being arrested after he's found standing over the body of his dead coach. I really enjoyed this book, so I'm definitely going to be looking into other books by Elle Casey. It was fairly easy to predict where the book was going to go regarding the reasons behind the coach's death as clues are dropped before the reveal but that didn't take anything away from the story itself.

I'm on the fence with this one. I liked it overall but it took me ages to get into. I found out after reading that it's actually the third book of the series it's part of yet Goodreads has it as the first book. Maybe if I'd read the first two, I might have been more invested? Who knows!

This book is fairly new and I keep seeing it in the book chart in the local supermarket and oh my god, it so deserves to be there! Hands down, my favourite book of the month! This book is such a mind fuck, I felt like my brain had been put in a blender by the time I finished it. Four friends, two couples and one tangled mess makes up this book. Celebrities aside (Dylan O'brien for me, Katy Perry for Glenn!), never ask your other half who they'd go for, especially people you know. That has to be the moral of the story here. Considering how much I loved this book, I really disliked all of the characters but you're not supposed to like them anyway. Honestly, you just need to read this book, like now!

I'm not that big into horror novels but I really enjoyed this one. It wasn't your stereotypical storyline, it was really unique and like nothing I've ever read before. I really liked the characters and was on the edge of my seat, hoping for them to make it to the end of the book alive! Thumbs up from me.

Look Incredible Deluxe Box, June 2017.

Look Incredible is my favourite beauty box on the market, which is why I've stuck with this company for over a year now. They offer two different boxes, a standard and a deluxe. I've tried both and realised that the deluxe box is the one for me! The deluxe box costs £35 per month on a subscription basis, with postage included in that price. The products inside are always high end and full size, no sample sizes here!

The products are always packaged nicely and if there is anything that could break on the way to it's destination, Look Incredible make sure it's wrapped securely in bubble wrap. That being said, I did receive one damaged product this month. All it took was one email and Look Incredible sent me a replacement in a speedy manor. As a company, customer service is something I have to rate them highly on, unlike some other beauty box companies I can think of. Let's take a look at this month's line up!

Decleor Aromessance Neroli Hydrating Night Balm (RRP £36)
I really like the sound of this product, though I've never tried this brand before. It's supposed to purify and balance the skin whilst locking in moisture. Anything that promises to help my skin feel more hydrated is a yes from me. Look Incredible state the RRP of this as £28 but it actually costs £36 on the Decleor website, which basically covers the cost of the whole box in one product!

Nars Matte Multiple in Exumas (RRP £25)
This was the damaged product I mentioned earlier so I was happy to receive a replacement as this is such a gorgeous colour. The idea of using cream products on my cheeks scares me a bit so I love the fact that this can be used on the lips as well.

Chanel Creme Lipstick in Aura (RRP £28)
Is this not one of the most beautiful nude shades you've ever seen?! I'm officially in love with this lipstick, it's probably one of the nicest I've ever received in a beauty box. The formula is so creamy, I just can't get enough of it. This has become my go to on work days.

Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara (RRP £19)
The mascara that needs no introduction! I already own a travel size of this but I hadn't gotten round to trying it yet. I can't complain about getting a full size because if the hype if anything to go by, I'm going to love this mascara.

L-R: Nars Exumas blended out, Chanel Aura.

Spa Retreats Moisture Rich Bath Cream
This wasn't on the product card so this is a cheeky bonus. The other four products add up  to a total over £100 so it was generous of Look Incredible to add this too. I love a good bath cream and this is probably my favourite out of all the Spa Retreats products that have been included over the last few months.

What I've Been Reading: May 2017.

This is an ideal holiday book, one that begs to be read whilst soaking up the sun in a bikini next to the pool! The  book is set in Mojacar in Spain, a place I'd never heard of before but since reading this, has now become a place I definitely want to visit. This was a nice, easy read that I really enjoyed.

I loved this book, which focuses on Emily and Sloane's friendship after Sloane and her family disappear. Emily receives a list from Sloane of targets for Emily to do, things that Emily normally wouldn't dare to do. Frank Porter, an acquaintance from school, offers to help her with the list over the summer and they become friends along the way. This book was very enjoyable , it's easy to see why it's so highly rated on Goodreads.

This book turned out to be more dark than I expected it to, based on the description on Goodreads but I'm so glas I read this. The book focuses on Ella and four of her childhood friends as they find their way back to each other. Ella is hiding a secret, that only one of her friends, Fallon, knows. It's easy to predict what Ella's secret is, but not to what extent and the end has a twist you won't see coming. I shed a few tears during this book, a definite recommend!

This was my favourite book I read in May, I sped through this! The book takes place after a school shooting, and Valerie's boyfriend was the shooter. The book flicks between flashbacks of Valerie and her boyfriend Nick's relationship, the actual shooting and it's aftermath, news articles and the present day as Valerie prepares to go back to school after the summer break. Nick and Valerie were both treated badly by their classmates and created a Hate List, of people and things they didn't like. It's this list that leads the police to suspect Valerie of helping Nick with the shooting, of knowing what he was going to do. For me, this book is a must read and left me very emotional, I cried for Valerie and was so angry at her father!  I'm so glad this popped up in my Goodreads recommendations.

I got this as a kindle prerelease on Amazon for 99p and it was so worth it. It's apparent straight away that Jacks's husband was having an affair. Police officers arrive at her home with the news that her husband died while he was in Maui, not only that but he was there with another woman, who also died. The point of views switches between Jacks's present day and Dylan's as the affair begins. Soon after, a man called Nick shows up at her door, claiming to be  Dylan's fiance. He suggests that they visit Maui together to get the answers they both need, setting up the book nicely. I  thought this book was going to be rather predictable but I was thrown a major curveball! Another book I loved this month, I'll be checking out other reads from this pair of authors for sure.

This is a bit of an odd one as I really enjoyed the book but I hated both of the main characters! The book centers on Daniel, his relationships with his mum and his girlfriend, Cherry. Laura, Daniel's mum, is very clingy to her son and doesn't gel with his new girlfriend, suspecting there is more to her than meets the eye. The point of view switches between Laura's and Cherry's, but it's so hard to be sympathetic to either of them as they both go too far. I definitely hated Cherry more as it seems the reasons behind her actions seems to be the rich lifestyle she thinks she deserves. A good suspenseful novel, and an amazing debut from Michelle Frances.

Look Incredible Deluxe Box, May 2017.

Yet again, Look Incredible have pulled it out the bag with their deluxe box. If anything, the standard of products seems to get better each month! The box costs £35 per month with postage included and you get 4 to 5 full size products, no sample sizes here! They also do a standard beauty box, which costs £25 a month including postage. The products inside that are also full size but not quite as high end.

The item I'm most excited about it the Too Faced Totally Cute Palette (RRP £32) which includes stickers to customise the outside. This is the second eyeshadow palette from Too faced in the past six months and I love both of them. Too Faced are one of my favourite brands so I'm very excited to have gotten this. Also the RRP is only £3 off the total value you pay for the box, which just shows what excellent value this subscription is.

I'm already working my way through a massive amount of body lotions but I like the sound of the No 7 Completely Quenched Moisturising Body Lotion. (RRP £12.99) As someone who suffers from dry skin, this sounds like it will be an absolute saviour! I like the smell too, which is great as scents in beauty boxes can be a bit hit and miss sometimes.

I'm definitely a bit of a junkie when it comes to lip products so I was happy to see the Laura Geller Love Me Matte Lip Crayon in Guava Lust (RRP £17.99). This is a lovely product as although it has a matte finish, the formula is very creamy and not at all drying. I  would have preferred a different shade though as this colour is very similar to the Tarte lip paint I got in last month's box. Thanks to Look Incredible, I've discovered a love for Laura Geller Products.

I was shocked to see the Dior Diorshow Khol (RRP £19.50) in the box. Motherflippin' Dior in a beauty box?! Are you kidding me?! I'm definitely going to  get a lot of use out of this for the perfect smoky eye.

I'm really pleased with the Lancome Le Sourcil Pro Eye Pencil (RRP £19.99) which has a brow pencil on end and a highlighter on the other. The brow pencil is  brown so won't be suited to everyone but it works well on me.

L-R: Laura Geller Lip crayon, Dior khol, Lancome brown pencil, Lancome highlighter.

The total worth of this month's box is £102.47, which is great value for £35. If you want to found out more about these boxes you can visit the Look Incredible website here.

What I've Been Reading: April 2017.

I got this as a kindle pre-release on amazon for 99p and I didn't quite know what to expect from it. In the end, I'm so glad I chose this over the other prereleases on offer that month! This was great and the two times I guessed what was going to happen were both wrong. One of my favourite books from last month, a definite recommend.

This was a book I was very eager for as I'd been loving the Friends series by Monica Murphy. I'm not sure if this is the last book in the series or not but it ties everything up nicely. Like the previous book, this one focuses on Jordan and Amanda who are my favourite couple in the series. I really hope there are more books to come though as there are a few characters who haven't been given their moment to shine yet!

How gorgeous is the cover of this book! I really enjoyed this book. It starts with the main character, Jill, waking up in hospital after being involved in a car crash on a school trip which she has no memory of. Her best friend was also in the car but died and witness statements say it looked like the car was crashed on purpose. As the reader we get to read police interviews and statements as we, as well as Jill, are left wondering if she did crash the car on purpose and why she would be compelled to do such. Such a good read!

This was my most easy read of the month. Pretty predictable but nice and lighthearted, with a little humour added in for good measure. I won't be reading the rest of the books in the series as it didn't blow me away but this would be a beach read for the summer.

My other favourite of the month. I read through this so quickly, I could hardly put it down. Hannah hardly suffers from anxiety and hardly goes out. The book starts as new neighbours move into the house opposite to her own. She's able to see into their home and thinks the daughter, April is in danger from her parents. April seems withdrawn, quiet and even holds up a sign saying 'Help' up to her bedroom window so that Hannah can see it. I wouldn't have been able to predict the ending of this book even if I'd tried but the twist you won't see coming is what makes this book so great! If I had to choose only one book I read from last month to pass on to others, it would be this one!
